Practical planning guide

Discuss a clinical trial or research invitation

Questions to help you understand a research opportunity before deciding whether to take part.

Practical next steps

  1. Keep the trial identifier, sponsor, recruiting centre and contact details. Check the public CTIS record where applicable.
  2. Ask your treating clinician whether the study is relevant to your diagnosis, care and circumstances.
  3. Confirm with the actual study site whether it is recruiting; a country-level map status may not describe that site.
  4. Ask the research team to explain the purpose, eligibility, tests, visits, possible risks, alternatives and what is uncertain.
  5. Ask whether allocation could include a comparator or placebo and how your usual care would be handled.
  6. Clarify travel, accommodation, participant expenses, insurance, data use, withdrawal and follow-up arrangements in writing.
  7. Read the participant information at your own pace and ask unanswered questions before considering consent. Participation is a personal decision and acceptance is not guaranteed.
